Tying a new Deer Hair Emerger Variation

This week Allan provides us with a variation on the Deer Hair Emerger pattern, this time incorporating elements from Bob Wyatt’s Dirty Duster patterns.

Yes, I know, I’ve posted Deer Hair Emerger flies many times before but to be honest, it’s such a simple but versatile pattern I had to highlight this one again.  This time my version of Bob Wyatt’s modern classic displays a couple of alterations in the form of the ‘shuck’ and added Grizzle Hackle.

This is my Dirty Deer Hair Emerger (DHE) which incorporates Bob’s DHE and Dirty Duster patterns with the Deer hair and Grizzle Hackle which I added in to help give additional contrast (makes it easier to track) as well as a little added stability with the addition of the ‘shuck’.  Emerging olives often show the remnants of their discarded outer skin (shuck) as they emerge from the nymph stage to adult, and I’ve merely added a tiny fibre tag to give the impression of one to this fly.

This has stood me in great stead throughout my Spring wild river trout fishing and my ‘ Go To’ first choice fly from March through to early May.  Dirty DHE. Dressing. Hook, Partridge K4AY Grub #12 -16. Thread, Semperfli light olive 8/0 Classic Waxed Thread.

Body and Rib, tying thread (I place a very thin layer of very thin varnish over for a little bit of added strength). Shuck, light cream predator fibre (keep it very sparse). Wing, Natural Roe Deer hair.  Hackle, Natural Grizzle saddle cock trimmed ‘ level’ below.  Dampen the body and liberally treat the wing and Hackle with Hunts Gel and this fly will float all day half in and half out the surface, irresistible to hungry trout.
